But who did change the original version to the present known Unshu is unknown. As you likely know, youtube has an annoying "nifty" feature wherein it suggests videos you might like based on previous watched videos. The Aragaki Unshu is as much different from the Shito Ryu version that i’ts hard to see a similiarity. In fact in no other Kata the fighting direction will be changed as often. The often done changing of direction creates irritation and is unexpected. The character of the Kata is like a storm, where the wind is blowing one time from this direction one time from the other, with different power. ![]() The important cooperation between Arms and legs demands good skills for coordination. Also we see the Art of Tai Sabaki, Yori Ashi and Suri Ashi. Unshu is a very fast and dynamic Kata and includes a versatile footwork with a lot of turns from 90 to 360 degrees. The four times repeat of Gyaku zuki exist only in the strongly changed Shotokan vesion. Some other techniques we can see in Kushanku Matsumura Bassai, and Sochin. The technique of the Ushiro Geri in low position with knee down (in Shotokan Mawashi Geri) is a typical technique of the tiger style. But this demands a special training of fingers and hands, otherwise the techniques are not usable in reality. Unshu (in Shotokan Unsu) is a very versatile Kata, with mainly advanced techniques like Ippon Nukite. The Shotokan version of Sochin indeed is a completely different Kata, which was made by Yoshitaka Funakoshi. Sochin can be placed into the Tigerstyle because of this properties. The performance of Sochin, with the strong difference between calm and power reminds to the Kata Paiku form Ryuei-Ryu. The technique Sukui Uke in Zenkutsu Dachi done backwards we can find in Aoyagi of Kenwa Mabuni. ![]() It includes techniques for develop the flexibility of the centre body and his muscles, but this needs the will to do it in the right way. The Sochin of Aragaki is a Kata where the changes of calmness to power are obvious. These concept of the beginning is identical to the beginning of Kata Sanchin, Seisan, Sanseiruu, Shisochin and Suparimpei. But in the next moment the Kata finds back to calmness by doing Kai Ashi in Neko Ashi Dachi in nearly slow motion. The following tsuki will be done with maximum power and is very explosive. It begins like Unshu in Neko Ashi Dachi doing Morote Yoko Uke, but with closed fists. Sochin is a very powerfull Kata, which also inculdes calmness and dignity. But demands not the level of fitness Unshu does. Because of this the Kata is the most advanced of the Itosu school. Doge and turns of the body with immediately counterattack. The fighting concept is full with suddenly action. For to use some of this techniques in reality it’s necessary to see the kind of attack in the very first moment. Also we see difficult lever techniques against fist attack. Gojushiho includes a lot of self defence techniques. But special training for the fingers and hands like in Unshu isn’t necessary. Some techniques only work if the timing is perfect and it’s also necessary to be able to preview the opponents intention. But like Suparimpei the inner details are the difficult parts. The movements of the Kata are not too much difficult to learn. Gojushiho (Aragaki Useishi) is a highly advanced Kata. According to Shito-Ryu Masters the Kata comes from the Aragaki school like Niseishi, Sochin and Unshu. The Kata is also known in the school of Matsumura, the teacher of Itosu and is in some Shorin-Ryu styles known as the Kata of the drunken Master. ![]() Gojushiho is known as the most advanced Kata in Shuri-te (Itosu).
